Chessbook alternative

A Chessbook alternative, beyond the opening

Like Chessbook, Matlo has you build your opening repertoire at your level, finds its gaps and has you review it with spaced repetition. On top of that, Matlo adds full analysis of your games, a profile against players at your level and exercises taken from your mistakes, from the middlegame to the endgame.

What Matlo does on top

A game is not only lost in the opening. Matlo analyses every one of your moves, from the opening to the endgame, and compares you with players at your level: you see whether the points you lose come from tactics, conversion, defence or your clock.

Every mistake becomes an exercise: the position before your error, to replay; the advantage you did not convert, against the engine; the motif you miss most, as a puzzle series. What you miss comes back with spaced repetition, like your repertoire.

  • An opening trainer against the replies of players at your level
  • “Fix your opening”: the opening mistakes that keep coming back in your games
  • The cost of each repertoire exit, five moves later
  • The dubious moves in your repertoire, according to Lichess evaluations
Repertoire exits: the move played, your repertoire's move, and what the exit cost you

What Chessbook does and Matlo does not

Chessbook goes further on opening content: statistics from master games, middlegame plans from top players, model games to replay by guessing the moves. Matlo has no master games database and does not write plans: its explorer and evaluations come from Lichess games and analyses. Chessbook also has native apps on iOS and Android, while Matlo is an installable web app.

Which one to choose?

If you only work on your openings and want plans and master games, Chessbook is made for that. If you want the same kind of repertoire and, in the same place, to know what costs you points in the rest of the game, Matlo brings both together.

Your repertoire already lives somewhere else? Matlo imports it as PGN, variations and comments included, or straight from a public Lichess study.

Frequently asked

Can I import my repertoire into Matlo?

Yes, as a PGN with variations, several chapters included, or from a public Lichess study. Comments, arrows and circles are kept.

Does Matlo find the gaps in my repertoire?

Yes. It follows the games of players at your level from the starting position up to move 7, works out the share your repertoire covers and takes you to the most frequent gap. The unexpected replies from your own games come first.

Does Matlo have a mobile app?

Matlo is a web app designed for the phone first. It installs on your home screen from the browser, in light or dark mode.

Is Matlo affiliated with Chessbook?

No. Matlo is an independent project, developed in France.

Comparison made on 25 October 2026 from the public websites of Chessbook. Chessbook is a trademark of its owner; Matlo is not affiliated with it. Spotted a mistake? Write to us at contact@matlo.app.
