Chess game analysis, move by move

Matlo imports your Lichess and Chess.com games and analyses them with Stockfish: inaccuracies, mistakes and blunders, accuracy for each side, an evaluation graph and key moments. Every mistake it finds then becomes an exercise.

Import your Lichess and Chess.com games

You link your Lichess account, by signing in with Lichess or with your username, and your Chess.com account with your public username. No password is asked for, and Matlo can neither play nor post on your behalf.

On the first import, all your blitz, rapid and classical games arrive, most recent first, rated or casual. New games are then picked up every 6 hours. Your last 20 games go to the front of the analysis queue, so your profile builds within the first minutes; the last 100 follow, then the rest of your history, when the server is free.

Every move judged, the Lichess way

Every position of the game is searched by Stockfish on our servers, with the two best moves. A move is an inaccuracy, a mistake or a blunder according to the winning chances it gives away: the same thresholds as Lichess, checked to match its own.

Each side's accuracy follows the Lichess method, to the point on the games compared. Matlo also marks good moves: the brilliant move, which sacrifices material without losing anything; the only move, when everything else loses; and the missed opportunity, when you let your opponent's mistake go.

  • Inaccuracy, mistake and blunder: ?!, ? and ??
  • Brilliant move (!!) and only move (!)
  • Accuracy for each side, as a percentage
  • Best move shown as an arrow on every mistake

Evaluation graph and key moments

The graph shows White's winning chances through the game, with mistakes and blunders marked on it. A second view shows the time spent on each move, when clocks are known. Touching the graph takes the board to that move.

The page opens on the key moments: the three heaviest mistakes of the game, in order, named from your point of view. The game turns, a costly mistake, a missed opportunity, your opponent's mistake: you see first what decided the result.

“Find the move” exercise: the position right after the opponent's mistake, to punish

From the game to the exercise

An analysed game does not stay a list of mistakes. “Find the move” replays its key moments as exercises: the position before your mistake, to find better, or the one after your opponent's mistake, to punish it.

Positions where you or your opponent went wrong become puzzles, taken from your games by the Lichess generator. Winning positions you did not convert become wasted advantages, to replay against the engine. And the motif of every mistake feeds your profile.

The engine and the explorer on every game

On a game page, Stockfish also runs in your browser: you explore a variation and it evaluates it move after move, up to three lines, without sending anything to our servers. A move played outside the game becomes a variation, which you leave in one gesture to return to the line played.

Both players' bars show the clock at the move displayed and the time spent on the last move, and the Openings tab shows what players at your level play in the position, with your repertoire exit when there is one. Everything works by touch as well as with a mouse, in light or dark mode.

Frequently asked

Does Matlo reuse the Lichess analysis?

No. Every game is analysed again by our Stockfish, Lichess games included, so your games are judged the same way whatever the platform.

How long does the analysis take?

About 16 seconds per game and per CPU core. Your last 20 games are analysed first; a game you open jumps the queue.

Which time controls are imported?

Blitz, rapid and classical, rated or casual. Bullet and variants are not imported.

Can I analyse a position or a PGN without a linked account?

Yes: the analysis board accepts a FEN or a PGN, with the engine in your browser and the opening explorer.
