Why train on your own chess games

Chess puzzles are not in short supply: the Lichess public database holds millions. What is missing is knowing which ones help you. Matlo starts from your games, trains you on the clock and brings back what you miss.

01

Your mistakes first

Every mistake in your analysed games gets its motif: fork, pin, hanging piece… The most frequent ones become puzzle series on that motif, and your profile tells you which one costs you most.

Profile: number one motif and dimensions compared with your level
02

By time control, on the clock

Thinking time, then a short window to play the line, as in a game. Blitz, rapid and long each have their own clock and rating: you don't calculate the same way in 30 seconds and in 5 minutes.

A blitz puzzle: 30 seconds to think, 10 to play
03

What you miss comes back

A missed puzzle comes back the next day, then later and later, until three solves in a row. Your repertoire positions follow the same rule.

Repertoire review with spaced repetition
04

Your own positions

Puzzles taken from your games, the advantages you let slip, replayed against the engine, and the key moments of every game: you train on what you actually played.

“Find the move”: a key moment of a game to replay

Puzzles come from the Lichess public database (CC0), picked around your rating and by motif, and from your own games.
