Opening repertoire

Opening repertoire trainer with spaced repetition

Matlo's repertoire is the tree of moves you want to play, built on the board with an explorer of games at your level, reviewed with spaced repetition and checked against your real games: it shows where you leave it and what is missing.

Repertoire builder: the board, your main move and its alternatives, the Position tab
12months of Lichess games in the explorer
30first plies covered by the explorer
200latest games read for exits
20new positions a day at most

Build on the board

Every move played in the builder is saved at once, yours as well as your opponent's. You can keep several moves in a position, with a main move. Positions are recognised by their FEN: a transposition joins the line already prepared instead of copying it.

You can keep several repertoires, one main per colour, start from your games, where lines played at least three times are suggested, import a PGN with variations or a public Lichess study, and export everything as PGN.

An explorer of games at your level

The explorer shows what is actually played in every position, from the public Lichess files: twelve months of games, the first 30 plies, by time control and rating band. By default, it shows your most played time control and your level.

On your opponent's turn, Matlo lists their replies in order of frequency at your level, prepared or not. Coverage tells you what share of games at your level stays in your repertoire up to move 7, and “Prepare the next one” takes you to the most frequent gap.

  • Coverage at your level up to move 7
  • Opponent replies ranked by frequency
  • Transpositions shared between lines
  • PGN and Lichess study import, PGN export

Review with spaced repetition

Every position where you are to move becomes an FSRS card. The review shows you the position and you play your move: right, the card comes back later; wrong, it comes back at the end of the session and again the next day. A new position is first shown with its move as an arrow: you learn before you review.

Twenty new positions a day at most, with slightly spread intervals: a large import does not come back all in the same week.

Where you leave your repertoire

In your last 200 games, Matlo looks for the first position where your repertoire had a move and the game played another: you deviated, or your opponent played a reply you had not prepared.

Exits are grouped by opening and shown on the position, with the move played and your repertoire's move as arrows. “Add” puts the move in your repertoire, “On purpose” removes it from the list.

Repertoire exits grouped by opening, with the position and the prepared move

Your openings compared with your level

Your most played lines, with White and with Black, are named and compared with players at your level who play the same line: your winning chances after move 15, the accuracy of your opening moves, your score.

A line to work on leads to its repertoire exits if there are any, otherwise to building it from your games, in the main repertoire of its colour. You go from “this opening costs me points” to “here is the move to prepare”.

Frequently asked

Can I import my repertoire from another tool?

Yes, as a PGN with variations, the exchange format of every opening tool, or from a public Lichess study. Comments are kept as annotations.

What is coverage?

The share of games at your level that stay in your repertoire up to move 7, following your main move and each opponent reply in proportion to its frequency.

Why one card per position rather than per line?

Because the same position can come from several lines. You review it once, and any reply from your repertoires is right there.

Does the explorer call the Lichess API?

No. It is served by our database, built from the public monthly files of database.lichess.org.
